At least 17 people have tragically lost their lives in water-related incidents across the UK after a record-breaking May heatwave triggered a deadly spate of accidental drownings. National media outlets have extensively covered the crisis, highlighting that a vast majority of the victims were children and teenagers who succumbed to cold water shock while attempting to cool off.

A national park was forced to remove a Facebook message telling people never to enter its waters “unless as part of a supervised event”, after criticism from outdoor enthusiasts.
Wild swimmers, hikers and cavers criticised the Peak District National Park Authority, claiming its “prohibitive” approach did not work, alienated millions who enjoyed open-water swimming and should be replaced with educational messages about safe swimming.
